Day at the Landfill

After stopping at homes and businesses to pick up waste, trucks bring what they've collected to Riverbend Landfill.

Trucks stop at the scales to weigh how much trash they will be disposing prior to proceeding to the active disposal area.

The disposal area has been prepared in advance with a two foot thick double liner system that keeps waste and wastewater (leachate) from getting into the soil and groundwater.

Each evening, the waste is covered with tarps or soil. Operating practices, monitoring, and control systems in place at the site are designed to protect the environment and the sites groundwater and air quality.

As the waste in the landfill decomposes, it naturally produces methane gas. Through our gas collection system, we capture the methane gas and channel it to our green energy plant where large combustion engines create electricity. In partnership with McMinnville Water & Light we provide enough electricity to power 2,500 homes and businesses.

We carefully maintain our site to ensure we meet or exceed all federal, state and local regulations.
