Did you know that Riverbend Landfill is becoming a local energy producer? In partnership with McMinnville Water & Light, Riverbend is constructing a green energy plant that will produce enough renewable energy to power 2,500 homes and businesses. The plant will begin producing energy this summer.
How do we do it? When the waste in the landfill decomposes, it naturally produces methane gas. With proven technologies, we are able to capture the methane gas and channel it through large combustion engines that create electricity. The Environmental Protection Agency recognizes the use of landfill gas as an environmentally friendly resource that helps reduce our reliance on fossil fuels like coal and oil.
